Dedicated to my former guild, and to my son, Aren, of whom I am very proud. Written in the year 94 of the Midnight Age as an essay for knighthood.
There are many paths one may take, and some of them are good. But only a very few of them are right and true. These paths are not always welcoming, nor are they often easily trod. They pose difficulties that require courage and strength. Their courses twist and turn through harsh terrain. The destination is known, but difficult to see from any distance. These are the paths that a Paladin must often brave if he is to fulfill his motto. They are journeys of the mind, body, and heart.
The mind of a Paladin must be keen and quick. It must have both knowledge, and the wisdom required to use that knowledge. It must be able to discern between good and evil, right and wrong, light and dark.
It contains understanding and aptitude, eager to be filled, and always active, ready to be tasked. Within the mind should be knowledge of the realm and of the creatures and people therein. There must be a grasp of the lore of plant and beast, class and culture, nature and industry. It must be fed regularly, kept strong and healthy. The sharp mind avails the Paladin much.
The body of a Paladin must be strong and able. It must be strengthened by trial, and exercised in battle. The body is a tool to be used for the good and light, kept in good form so that its effect might be maximal.
Without the body, a Paladin could not perform his duties to his fellow Paladins, and will fail to protect life and innocence. Only with a well trained body can a Paladin master himself, for a body that is not well trained can never respond with the speed of a health mind. It must be able to resist the elements, be resilient in battle, and hold firm against magiks used against it. The body is the home of the Paladin, first and foremost, and if healthy, will serve the Paladin well.
The heart of a Paladin must be pure and true. It must contain strong conviction, and compassion for other living beings both good and evil.
It must contain the qualities of justice and light, tempered with mercy and good will. It must be hardened towards evil, yet soft towards the misguided. Ever must it be quick to love and slow to deal out judgement.
It should contain a lightness and good humour in welcome company, but retain a serious and dedicated nature in times of conflict and stress.
It is generous, giving freely and without remorse. It is kind, offering help where needed, often at the expense of its own desires. It is not boastful or prideful, but meek and gentle, even though it contains great strength and power. It is responsible, respectful, and always courteous.
A strong heart is the center of the Paladin existence.
Much responsibility is placed within the hands of a Paladin knight, and so, a Paladin also must be responsible for their whole self. The paths we take will challenge us. But in overcoming weakness, one can reach potentials others thought impossible. Oh Paladin, are you worthy of thy name? Will you tred a path few travel?
