MIA

Poted by Arota on 23 Jun 2006 03:49 - MIA
This is just to let you all know that I'll be gone for the next little while.  My computer suffered a physical hard disk failure, and the local whiz computer guys are unable to recover anything from it.  And while this doesn't affect any of my Aetolia stuff, which was on my secondary drive, it does result in the complete and utter loss of 8 years worth of writing.  And, as I am a writer, this bothers me.  A lot.  In fact, getting that writing saved was the only thing that mattered to me.  They could have destroyed my entire computer and charged me $500, but as long as they came up with a disk holding that writing, I would've happily done it.

So, as you could guess, I'm very upset.  As in, G*DD*MNED F*CKING READY TO KILL SOMETHING upset.  As in, if I'm in my present mood tomorrow, I will be phoning in to work and informing them I'm not coming in because I'll punch the first person who smiles at me.

And in this state, I'm not getting on Aetolia.  I'm liable to turn all my characters into vampires or get them shrubbed.  Also, this whole thing has sort of soured me towards computers for the time being.

SO.  Now that I'm done ranting and complaining about my day...

I'll probably see you all in a week or so.  Maybe.  If I don't, I'm either still sulking or in jail on charges of assault with a blender. (or knife...we have some of those at work, too)

Not sure if it helps right now, but hopefully will come in handy in future ... try to write backups on removable disks every 1-2 months at least (you can use a CD or DVD, don't even need to use an entire disk each time, just use the multisession disk .. sorry for your loss, I can sortof understand how you feel, I lost myself some data (although it was through an .. accidental format -eyeshift- and by that time I didn't know how to use recovery software), anyway, just try to make backups from time to time and it should prevent this from happening again ...

Ooooh, I had a backup.  But I only have the one CD-RW, and I was using it to transfer stuff between computers. *twitch* So of course my writing wasn't backed up on it anymore.

Anyways, I'll now be spending $1000+ to try and get that data back instead of going on a prolonged vacation this year.

Best wishes then .. and hopefully you'll learn not to use RWs next time.

I'm really sorry to hear about that, Arota.

I went through the same. (I was aspiring to be an author at the time.) And I lost near five years of work because my hard disk exploded and some idiot wiped my external hard disk drive clean.

I hope you get it all back, anyway. After I lost all of that work I just gave up on writing altogether.

All the best to you.

You know instead of spending a thousand dollars on fixing the damn thing just buy a new one
Poted by Arota on 10 Jul 2006 15:56 -
Yeah, sure, I'll just get right on buying myself some new collections of writing and photos....

To clarify, the computer is fine.  I'm using it now.  It's the data on it that I want back.

Just copy it to a external HD if you don't have a dvd writer.

Hatake, just read the first post, her HDD broke and she didn't have any backups, that was the entire problem.

Thank you Indi.

OK, so I got woken up out of a dead sleep three times this morning, making me a very grumpy person on the third time through.  However, once I realized who was waking me up the third time for what purpose, I became a Happy Camper!

Because I'll likely be getting my data back around mid-september.  For just shy of $1000.  Which means I can get a new operating system. (Windows ME makes baby jesus cry)

So.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAY! *happy dance*

Yeah.  Just thought I'd let y'all know...so you don't get too weirded out by having a happy-skippy-whee Arota about.

Except.  You might not.  Because ZMud is giving me errors about trying to access kernel32.dll or something and randomly shutting down (like when I'm in the middle of bashing) so I'm going to try and fix it before I get on Aetolia again to do anything.

Try restarting your computer. That normally fixes the problem.

OR you'll just have to reinstall Zmud.

Yeah, I keep having to restart, but the error keeps coming back...soooo, I'm just going to live with it until I get windows XP.

So my computer's in the shop getting the returned hard drive installed.  Yay!

...

I'll be gone a few days until I get it back...
